Set your Goals and Achieve Them
Goals: big and small can be the building blocks for a happier life, and the way we set them can make all the difference in achieving them. Find out how to achieve your goals. Having life goals that we want to reach and working towards them is an important part of being human. The path toward our goals may not always be smooth or easy, but having goals, big or small, is part of what makes life good. It gives us a sense of meaning and purpose, points us in the direction we want to go and keeps us interested and engaged, all of which is beneficial to our overall happiness. Over 200 years ago, Aristotle said that a good start is half the achievement. As far as goals are concerned, he is right (and it seems he was right about a lot of things, too). Caring about how we set our goals makes us more willing to achieve them, and achieving them makes us feel good about ourselves and our lives.
1- Decide
Think of something you want to do or work towards. no matter what, As long as it’s something you want to do – ideally something you’re interested in or excited about. It should be something you want to do for yourself and not for something or someone else. It can be something big or something small – sometimes it’s easier to start with something small. It is often helpful if it is something beyond what you can currently do – goals can be motivating
2- Write it carefully, in details.
Writing down our goals increases our chances of sticking to them. Write down how you will reach your goals and when you would like to achieve them. Ask yourself: What will it look like and how will you feel when I achieve it? How do you relate to who or what you value in your life? Describe your goal in specific terms and timelines. For example, I want to plant lettuce, carrots, and peas in the empty lot in my garden by the end of May instead of wanting to do some planting work. Write your goals in terms of what you want, not what you don’t want. For example: I want to be able to wear my favorite jeans again, Instead of I don’t want to gain weight anymore.
3- Tell someone.
It also seems that telling someone we know our goals makes us more likely to stick to them.
4- Divide your goals.
This is especially important for big goals. Think of small goals that are steps on the way to achieving your bigger goal. Sometimes our big goals are a little vague, like I want to be healthier. Breaking these down helps us be more specific. So a smaller goal might be to run regularly or even be able to run around the park in 20 minutes without stopping. Write down your mini goals and try to set some dates to do that too. Having several smaller goals makes each one a little easier and gives us a sense of success along the way, making it more likely that we will stay on track towards our larger goal.
5- Plan your first step.
An ancient Chinese proverb says that a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. Even if your goal isn’t to walk 100 miles, thinking about the first step on the road will really help you get started. Even if you don’t know where to start, there’s no excuse – your first step might be to research how to get started online, think of people to ask, or pick up a book on the subject from the library. Then think about your next step…and the next.
6- Keep going.
Working towards our goals can sometimes be difficult and frustrating – so we need to persevere. If your step doesn’t work, Think of something else you can try that still moves you forward. Even just a little bit. if you are struggling, Ask people you know for their thoughts on what you can do. They may help you see a different way. Thinking of different ways to reach our goals increases your likelihood of success. If you actually hit it – take a break and re-read the goal you wrote when you started. If you need to adjust your aim – that’s okay too. Then think back to a small next step.
7- Celebrate and reward yourself
when you reach your goal, Take time to enjoy it and thank those who have helped you. Think about what you enjoyed and learned along the way.
